Finance & Accounting for the Oil & Gas Industry
Understand how oil and gas activities are accounted for and evaluated, including exploration costs, joint arrangements, depletion, decommissioning, reserves and project economics.
Plan, control and report project finances by building cost budgets, forecasting cash flow, applying earned value management and handling contract payments, variations and claims.
Financial Management for Projects & Contracts covers the financial side of delivering projects, from estimating and budgeting through to cost control, cash flow forecasting, contract payments and final account. Participants learn how different contract types allocate financial risk, how to build a cost breakdown structure, how to track performance using earned value management and how to recognize contract revenue over time under IFRS 15. Variations, claims, retentions and advance payments are examined so that commercial and finance staff can protect margins and cash throughout the project life cycle.
The course is built around a running project case that participants budget, monitor and report on as it progresses and encounters scope changes and delays. Exercises include calculating earned value indicators, preparing a project cash flow forecast, evaluating a variation and drafting a cost report for a steering committee. Examples draw on construction, engineering and service contracts. The course can be run as an in-house program, with cases built around the organization's own contract forms, cost codes and reporting templates.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Build project budgets using a cost breakdown structure and realistic contingencies
Compare how lump sum, remeasurement and cost-reimbursable contracts allocate financial risk
Monitor performance using earned value metrics such as CPI, SPI and EAC
Forecast project cash flow including retentions, advance payments and payment terms
Evaluate variations and claims and their impact on cost and margin
Prepare clear project cost reports for management and clients

Qatar has invested heavily in infrastructure, transport, energy, real estate and public facilities, and major projects continue to shape the economy. Effective financial management of these projects protects public and private investment, keeps contractors solvent and helps ensure value for money. Strong project finance and commercial skills also support the sustainable development and efficient use of resources emphasized in Qatar National Vision 2030, across construction, engineering, oil and gas and government programs.
