Learn double-entry bookkeeping and the full accounting cycle, from recording transactions to preparing a trial balance, income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement.
Fundamentals of Finance and Accounting is a foundation course in the mechanics of accounting. It explains how business transactions are captured through double-entry bookkeeping, posted to ledgers, checked in a trial balance and turned into the three core financial statements. Learners also cover accruals, prepayments, depreciation and inventory, so they understand why reported profit differs from the cash in the bank. The course gives new and junior finance staff a dependable technical base on which later study, including professional qualifications, can build.
Teaching is hands-on. Each topic is followed by bookkeeping exercises, worked journal entries and a running case company whose records learners maintain from opening balances through to period-end statements. Common errors, such as misclassified expenses or missed accruals, are examined so participants learn to spot and correct them. Short reviews consolidate each stage of the accounting cycle. The course can also be run as an in-house program, using an organization's own chart of accounts and transaction types to make the practice directly relevant.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Apply the accounting equation and double-entry rules to everyday business transactions
Record transactions in journals and post them accurately to the general ledger
Prepare a trial balance and locate and correct common bookkeeping errors
Process period-end adjustments for accruals, prepayments, depreciation and inventory
